Match Report 16th September 06

Lavant 1
Worthing BOCB 3

After last week’s 4-3 victory over Lavant in the cup, Worthing started in bright and lively fashion with Ryan Bartlett giving them the lead on 5 minutes. The home side struck back quickly when Sheppard won the ball and delivered a cross for Loversidge to run home on 12 minutes.

But just like last week, Lavant failed to press the ball and invited Worthing to deliver the long ball which proved their downfall last Saturday. It did again this Saturday as Leon Bunn, on 16 minutes, and Greg Woods, 9 minutes later, both scored. It all looked over when Worthing were awarded a penalty but Lavant keeper Pullen saved from the spot.

Again like the previous Saturday this Div II league match turned about completely in the second half. John Strange replaced Blackman at the back and when Lavant’s other central defender went off injured, the new pair dealt with Worthing’s long ball much better.

The home side played patient build up play which allowed the mid-field to support the strikers and Lavant dominated the game. Loversidge hit the post, volleyed a Parker cross which Worthing keeper Abrahmas did well to save, and broke through from another Parker cross to shoot over.

Worthing however dug in and defended well taking all three points. The teams play a third time next Saturday in another cup competition.
