BoshamvsLavantProgramme1982

Lavant coach Mike Kent has come across a programme which is of the Premier Division fixture between Bosham and Lavant some 30 years ago on the 23rd of October 1982.

Mike was actually playing for Lavant’s first team at the age of sixteen, wearing the number 11 shirt and leading the attack, so he kept the progamme as a memento of his early footballing days.

In the Bosham programme there is also section about Lavant titled “News of Today’s Visitors”.

BoshamvsLavantLFC Write-up1982

Also there is a player profile for the Lavant squad.
Mike we all know is still vey much involved with the club, helping out with training and Richard Sims also mentioned, attends and watches Lavant’s game most weeks.

BoshamvsLavantPlayer Profiles1982

Richard Sims: Centre forward. 3 seasons with the club.

Mike Kent: Aged 16. In his first season with Lavant. Previously with Chichester City

The teams line up is listed below and Lavant were noted as playing in all yellow, with Bosham in red, white and red.  The same as it will be at this weekends fixture at Lavant.

The league table as of the 16th October 1982 saw the now current County League Division 1 leaders East Preston top of the league, having played seven and won seven. Note only two points for a win in those days!

BoshamvsLavantLeague Tables1982

East Preston 14, Rustington 10, Bourne Park 10, Ferring 9, Sun Alliance 8, Sidlesham 8, Petworth 7, Eastergate Utd 6, Southwater 5 , Fernhurst 4, Lavant 3 , Midway 2, Bosham 2, Emsworth 0.

Nine of the fourteen clubs are still in existance, with six in the West Sussex League and three in the Sussex County League.

Both, Lavant (having played 5 and had 3 points) and Bosham (having played 6 and had 2 points) were in the bottom four of the league and needing to put some results together in order to move up the table.  So this game 30 years ago was an important fixture.

Wonder what the score was?

Lets hope this Saturday’s result goes to Lavant, as these two clubs meet once more in the West Sussex Premier league 30 years on.

Match Report 6th October

The Premier League leaders entertained Lavant at their home ground at Hunston. The visitor’s, however controlled the first half with organised defending and speedy counterattacks.

Early on Rob Chiverton in goal pulled off two impressive saves from Ryan Seacombe and then Louis Weller. So when Matt Lyttle swung in the resulting corner, Mike Bartley headed Lavant in front after only 6 minutes. The same corner was replicated, this time for captain Matt Stevens to head the second in off the crossbar just before the quarter hour.

A corner at the other end found Nathan Agate strike from a narrow angle but Lavant ‘keeper, Neil Sanson, was up to the challenge to also pull off a fine save. It was Hunston’s only serious threat of the first half.

At the restart, Weller on 54mins and Seacombe on 61mins forced two fine saves from Chiverton. But, thereafter, the momentum was with the homeside who capitalised on their advantage, when Leeroy Sweeney pulled Hunston back into the game with a low powerful shot in the 65th minute.

Lavant soaked up pressure and both Seacombe and Sweeney missed sitters in the final seconds of the game to leave Lavant picking up a vital 3 points.

Match Report 29 September

Petworth 4 Lavant 3
Malcolm Simmonds Cup

Lavant crashed to their third consecutive defeat and were knocked out of their cup competition by a very determined Petworth side.

Martin Dillon opened Petworth’s account in the 6th minute and Rob Levett hit the side netting soon after. Though the visitors played good build up football, the final approach to the attacking third let them down. Even so, Mike Bartley and James Sandford came close and a penetrating run by stand in central defender, Matt Lyttle set Sandford up.

His stinging shot was superbly saved by Alex Wadey in goal. Levett was upended in the box and Dan Warren converted the spot kick just before the half-hour.

Then when the ball was given away in midfield by the Chichester side, Dillon punished with his second goal on 37 minutes, giving Petworth a 3-0 lead at the break.

Petworth’s joy was ecstatic when Dillon completed his hat-trick 2 minutes after the restart.  Bartley then had a penalty appeal denied and at the other end Neil Sanson saved from Levett’s 57 minute strike.

But Lavant were a different side in the second half and when Bartley fed Sandford the striker pulled one back for the visitors on the hour.

Bartley himself hit Lavant’s second from 30 yards 4 minutes later and when he was upended in the box converted the penalty 3 minutes from normal time.

Petworth held out against non stop pressure. Richard Gabb shaved the homeside’s crossbar in stoppage time. It was the last gasp and Petworth moved on to the next round, whilst Lavant have a lot of questions to answer of themselves.

Match Report 22nd September

Shoreham Reserves 3 Lavant 2
Sussex Intermediate Cup

Ryan Seacome and James Sandford in Shorehams’s 6 yard box, as Mike Bartley jumps to head the ball, with Richard Gabb lining up a shot on goal

After 30 games without losing, Lavant suffered their second defeat in two weeks. Travelling to Shoreham, they faced an alert and strong homeside but edged the first half in style.

Despite the Brighton side hitting the crossbar three times, Lavant deserved their 1-0 half-time lead after Richard Gabb and Ryan Seacombe had closed down the homeside’s defenders and given Mike Bartley a chance outside the box to finish in style.

Lavant ‘keeper, Neil Sanson, had by then made two outstanding saves. But, James Sandford and Ryan Seacombe for Lavant had forced two fine stops from Sam Brooks at the other end.

But within one minute of the restart, Shoreham had equalised through Craig Stevens, as Lavant’s lack of concentration exposed them to the sucker punch.

Then, seven minutes later, Bartley almost restored Lavant’s lead from a corner. A Seacombe-Bartley combination saw the latter force another fine save from Brooks.

But, two minutes later, Stevens got his second for Shoreham with a fine finish.

The game took another twist, when Lavant were awarded a free kick. Substitute, Mike Neville, floated the ball in and Bartley headed his second and put Lavant level on 78 minutes.

The homeside clinched the tie, however, when Jonny Buggy’s narrow angle shot was deflected past Sanson two minutes from time.
